Re-elect Carol Hunstein

Carol Hunstein has never lost an election, beginning in 1984 when as a young lawyer she ran for judge of the DeKalb Superior Court. She was reelected four years later. Since her appointment to the Georgia Supreme Court in 1992, she has been returned to office three times.

Most recently, in November, 2006, Carol won a hotly contested campaign in which she was outspent by more than three to one. Her opponent benefitted from millions of dollars in television advertising paid for by third parties, including a front group known as the Safety and Prosperity Coalition funded largely by anonymous donors and special interests from outside Georgia. Carol won in a landslide, receiving more than 63 percent of the votes and winning all 159 counties in the state.

Carol is gratified to have received overwhelming support in the campaign from lawyers, business leaders, prosecutors, sheriffs, Republicans, and Democrats. She was particularly pleased to have been received the editorial endorsement of 20 newspapers in the state, including all six major metropolitan dailies. In fact, every newspaper which made an endorsement recommended that she be reelected. Here are some of the highlights:

Albany Herald: Justice Hunstein "passes every standard for re-election."

Columbus Ledger-Enquirer: "This is a slam-dunk no-brainer, folks. We do not just endorse Carol Hunstein's candidacy; we strongly urge all voters to help keep control of Georgia's highest court in the hands of Georgians and out of the hands of D.C. special interest groups."

Atlanta Journal Constitution: "The Safety and Prosperity Coalition wants to undermine the state's court system by buying a seat on the Supreme Court. Justice Carol Hunstein stands in the way of that effort. Georgia voters should stand with her."

Macon Telegraph: "There are some who would like to ... fill the court with partisan lackeys. Hunstein has shown that she doesn't follow ideology, just the law. Carol Hunstein is our choice"

LaGrange Daily News: "We believe we can trust Georgia voters to reject this blatant attempt to sabotage the precious principle of an impartial judiciary. ... Re-elect Justice Carol W. Hunstein."

Carroll Star-News: "We are better served with a woman who knows life's lessons ... than we are with a dilettante Bush appointee with little or no courtroom experience... . Hunstein deserves your vote"

Waynesboro True Citizen: "We'd like to think justice is not for sale in Georgia. A vote to re-elect Justice Carol Hunstein ... will be a vote to guarantee that it's not."

Savannah Morning News: "We encourage Georgians to keep Justice Carol Hunstein on the state Supreme Court"

Marietta Daily Journal: "The best way ... for the public to reinforce the integrity of the Georgia Supreme Court is by re-electing Justice Carol W. Hunstein"

Waycross Journal-Herald: "Ms. Hunstein is a highly regarded justice ... . The Journal-Herald urges its readers to support her reelection"

Rome News-Tribune: "Voters on Nov. 7 should ... make a special effort to support Justice Hunstein and an independent judiciary."

Fitzgerald Herald-Ledger: "Justice Carol Hunstein has been an excellent Supreme Court Justice and should be returned to office"
